Flat Ellen
May 3 2008, 2:10 PM EDT
The other day I received a "Flat Stanley" from my sweet nephew asking me to help him with his school project. It brought back great memories of doing this years ago with my sons. You all know Flat Stanley, right?

Just wondering how we could do a "Flat Ellen" project where we sent our own Flat Ellen around the USA and then deliver (mail) it to her at the Studio with photos of all the places Flat Ellen has been on her journey. I was looking for a picture of that great costume someone recently sent Ellen thinking that would make a good Flat Ellen but I can't find one.

If you find a good full-body picture of Ellen, please post it in the Photo Gallery.

We have to work out the logistics of getting Flat Ellen across the USA (or around the world) while maintaining some semblence of security (i.e. not giving out home addresses) since this is the internet.

Anyone want to participate if we can figure this out???

OMG!!! You are not going to believe this...really...I had the same thought about a month ago and I forgot about it. One of my co-workers had received a Flat Stanley from a the daughter of her friend a couple of years ago and she took it with her on vacation and took all kinds of pics of it...at the beach, out to dinner, etc. I would definitely participate in this! Thanks for mentioning it!!! It's such a great idea! I will see if I can have my friend send me photos of the flat Stanley to give people an idea of what you are referring to.

That is SO weird, human! Great minds and all that :)

I've got some ideas and will try to pull it together next week (I'll be away for a few days in LA). I did post a picture of Flat Stanley in the Photo Gallery. I think we can adapt him pretty easily. The clogger picture may be a good one ... gotta try to find that.

I think it would be fun to have Flat Ellen go all over and then send Flat with her vacation photos to Ellen.

Glad you like the idea and want to participate! We'll have a lot of fun with this -- it's a great way for wikis to pull together on a project that requires no skill!

abbyjude -- you are WONDERFUL!

Thanks -- it worked like a charm!!! After all my Googling, it was right there on the website! Who knew? I've uploaded it to the Photo Gallery and can go from there!

So, will we all make our own Wiki Ellen's or are we going to use the same one and send it around the globe to other people? Just curious how this will work. I like the idea of her "traveling" places but the down side is the possibility of her being lost in the mail or destroyed somehow; on the flip side, if we have more than one Ellen it loses it's authenticity. If we have just one Ellen, how will we decide who gets to have her, when, and for how long? I'm just thinking logistically here for a moment.

I'm working through the logistics in my mind ...

To me, it would be better to have one Ellen (laminated) no bigger than a piece of photocopy paper so that it is easy (and inexpensive) to mail.

More than one may work, too for the reasons you state.

Some random thoughts ...

A post office box would be good. I can use my business one possibly.

Maybe Ellen could go from person to person but the photos could be sent to the p.o. box so the envelope doesn't get too heavy.

I'll be on a plane tomorrow and will have some quiet time to think about this then.

All input / ideas are welcome!

Well, if people take their photos digitally, we could post them up here rather than mailing them with the Ellen. We should create a Flat Ellen page here on the Wiki (when it becomes appropriate, not now because we don't really have anything to put up yet). I like the idea of a laminated Flat Ellen. That would be cool. What about having different outfits for her?? As for maintaining the privacy of the participants, that's a good idea. I used to have a P.O. Box but I just got rid of it. I might just use my business address rather than pay for a P.O. Box for a short period of time for this project. Still you have some great ideas.

Where are you going??? On vacation? I was supposed to be on a plane to San Fran tomorrow but my meeting was postponed. I'll be in Phoenix at the end of the week though...

Ahhh ... digitally! Why didn't I think of that? That would be best! I do have a business p.o. box we can use if we decide do that.

So maybe having our one authentic laminated Flat Ellen travel around the country / world and just posting the photos on the wiki gallery would be the best way to go. We can ask Johnny4 to get us set up with a page, I'm sure. I don't have a clue how to do that stuff.

Where am I going? Fun story ... I'm a big Dancing with the Stars fan. Early in the season I signed up online for tickets never thinking I'd get them. Last week, got an email from DWTS asking if I'd like tickets for the taping of their 100th episode special. Seems they are having one person for each state (plus one guest) be their VIP guests. I responded right away and told them I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate my birthday (which is today) than going to see one of my favorite shows. The next day I got the final word that I was selected to represent Florida. I asked my best friend to come (hubby needs to stay home with the boys) so we're having a whirlwind trip to LA -- leaving tomorrow a.m., taping on Tuesday. flying home on Wednesday. I'm so excited I could burst! Of course, I'm spending today doing laundry, taking time outs on the computer, and getting everything set for while I'm away. Sorry for the long answer ... :)

Too bad you couldn't take flat Ellen with you to DWTS! Get a picture of her on the dance floor or something? I'll be happy to help with setting up a page, let me know when you're ready. Have a great trip MVille, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

I might be to young to know how this REALLY works. BUT I was wondering couldn't we send each other a "digital" Ellen. Then we print it out and take it with you on trips.

We could make up a sheet that has columns.
Like for instance:

Members: HAVE vacationed with 'Ellen' Sent to:
HumanELLENment X Humanafterall
Humanafterall X Johnny 4
Johnny 4 X .....

I Like the idea of laminated Ellen......like a paper doll....and I can't wait to dress her up!!!(I call dibs on the Camp Wiki Kaa-Kaaah shirt!
One tip on laminating...use a matte (dull) finish. The shiny finish can reflect camera flash/sunlight.
I don't have a business address, so I would probably just use my home address with my initials or my maiden name.
We should probably make a list if where Flat Ellen goes, maybe if we just contact the next person and can get a dummy email, we could contact the next person, limiting the number of people we share info with. ANyone going somewhere special should request her presence in advance.....and I think it would be fun to post a picture of ourselves with Flat Ellen also!!

Having her laminated is a great option...afterall, someone may want to take her to the beach! I'm going to be in some great places this summer - Denver, Vancouver, Seattle, just to name a few; however, it will be in different months. I like the idea of having an actual photo of her head on the doll, so there's no question it is supposed to be in Ellen's likeness.

I used to LOVE paper dolls! In fact, my grandmother saved the ones from when my mom and aunt were little so I had paper dolls from the 50's and 60's as well as those from the 70's.

I always dressed my paper dolls in much cuter outfits than they came with...and then my sister and I would fight over who got the Betsy McCall paper dolls out of the magazine. Finally my mom and grandmom both got the magazine so we would not squabble..... Do you find this valuable?
