Spot's Stew from Halo
May 6 2008, 3:24 PM EDT
I've recently switched my cats over to Ellen's pet food and they LOVE it. I have one cat in particular (Alistair) who is losing his fur. We have had him to the vet and they can't find a thing wrong with him. I read that the woman that started Halo did so because her cat spot had several things going on with him, including hair loss. I'm hopeful this might help Al, as we call him, but I've had all of my pets on high quality food since they were babies, so I'm not sure it's his diet. Anyhow, just wanted to throw that info out there. It's great food but it is VERY expensive compared to other high-end foods (like Evo from Innova, which is what I have been feeding). I'm thinking of switching the dogs over as well, but I might have to take out a second mortgage to afford it. Do you find this valuable?

How expensive is it?
My newest kitty Dixie, was scraatching her ears and lost her ear fur....she ended up having a yeast infection in her ears. After 2 weeks of ear drops, multiple claw wounds to me and a tablespoon of lowfat plain yogurt every day, she is finally grtowing hair again. The vet has me giving all 3 cats the yogurt every day, with an omega 3 supplement mixed in. They seem to be shedding less and their coats look better, shinier.

My girlfriend picked up the small bag of kibble at Petco and I think it was around $12 or $13...I'm not sure how many ounces were in the bag because I don't have it anymore. We need to buy more so I will check the next time we go shopping. I should try the Omega 3 supplement with the yogurt as well. My cats all have great shiney coats but I'm willing to try other things for Al. He looks so pathetic with all of his bald spots!

Okay, here's the low-down....a 3 lb. bag of Spot's Stew is around $12-$13. I used to buy 40 lb. bags of Evo by Innova for around $42. My cats love the Spot's Stew and eat more of it than they did the other food. I'm going to have to get a second job just to afford their dietary needs! Sheesh...my pets eat better than I do! They eat more???? I have one cat who is a bit chunky, so that would not help his diet (he has to lose a lb by July......) So I guess Spot's stew is very kitty tasty. I may buy a bag and hand it out piece by piece as a treat for them. They are easily bribed with treats to do tricks. All 3 can high five, and Jude can give kisses and Roxie high fives with her left paw and waves hi with her right..and she knows the difference. I guess I have too much time on my hands!! I think it is fantastic that Ellen is endorsing this product. There is so much room for improvement in the pet food industry and it is awesome to see someone as respected as Ellen endorsing and enlightening others to the importance of feeding a more whole-food approach with higher quality ingredients.

I personally enjoyed the book "The Whole Pet Diet" by the gal that started Halo. In it she talks a lot about omega's and their aid in dermatological type challenges. Just an FYI...she also mentions that while kitties tend to love dairy products, she warns against regular use since they do tend to be mucus forming (pg. 122). Perhaps adding a pro-biotic sprinkled on top of food will give the same yeast fighting benefits. My vet recommended it and the kitties eat it right up. I also noticed that eliminating grains from their diet has eliminated the ear and coat problems in mine.

Not to take profits from Miss Ellen(because I think she is doing a great thing endorsing better pet care) but I have several carnivores in the house and the premium foods were getting quite spendy. Thus, I started making cat/dog food out of humanely raised meats & organic veggies using Dr. Piersons recipe at catinfo.org (catnutrition.org is great too). When I started I had a 20 year old gal that was suffering from irritable bowel and the itchies and the food completely resolved the problems. She died last summer (at 23yrs!) of old age and without any disease. Her blood work was phenomenal a few month before. She just got tired and decided she was done.

Making food is certainly time consuming and not practical for everyone but for me I make a big batch which takes about 4 hours and freeze it for the month. It ends up being about $2.25 lb (much cheaper than the highest premium food) and I like knowing there are no grains, anti-biotics, hormones or pesticides in their food and that the farm animals were raised in a kind way. (yes I am obsessed!) :)

P.S. It's great to know there are others in the world who care so much for their animal companions. It only makes sense that Ellen would attract such high caliber people since she herself is one.

Wishing everyone the very best health & happiness for you AND your animals. >^..^<

Handing the food out as treats would be a great idea if the kibble were not so small....it's TINY! I suppose this is to help aid digestion since some cats hardly chew their food at all. I have a couple who just sit and inhale! The dogs also love Spot's Stew, so I've had to hide it from them....place it up so high that only the cats can get to it. I might switch my dogs over as well...perhaps buy a small bag of the dog food to see how they like it. Right now they don't over eat. They, like the cats, free feed - a blessing of the breed, I suppose - but I'm concerned they might love the Halo dog food as much as they love the cat food and just go nuts over it!

Wow! I sure wish I had the time to make food for my pets but I just don't. How cool that you are so devoted. I feel pretty good about what I do feed them, and it shows. All of my animals are pretty darn healthy! Good for you for being so enlightened. I wish more people in the world cared as much!

We just stocked up on two 6 lb. bags of Spot's Stew and that cost $40.00 ($19.99/each lb. bag). It's like the filet mignon of cat food!
